ELLIOT PARKS

A Dedicated Mentor To Hawaii Entrepreneurs

We are greatly saddened by Elliot’s passing on June 11, 2021. Elliot was a scientist with significant venture capital experience. His network covered North America and Asia.

He led companies as CEO with vision and discipline. HiBEAM, a mentoring organization for high tech entrepreneurs in Hawaii was exceedingly fortunate to have him as member mentor. He knew science and business, and with this combination of expertise and acumen, he helped entrepreneurs forge ahead in the journey bringing scientific innovation to the market. As Hawaii Biotech’s CEO, he showed us how to do it right in keeping a company well funded and developing vaccines for the world. We valued his views and contributions at the discussions, learning from him about building the strategies to optimally serve the scientific entrepreneurial community. Barry Weinman, one of HiBEAM’s founders emphasized that he had great respect for Elliot.

Elliot was a mentor’s mentor. HiBEAM greatly appreciates his support and friendship given unconditionally. Russel Cheng shared:

“In 2007, I left Microsoft and returned home to Hawaii to spend time with family. I awkwardly felt like a tourist back in my own city. I didn't have many professional contacts when I returned. Through a mutual friend, I met Elliot who hosted me for a one on one lunch. He took an interest in my experiences and what I was planning to do going forward. He was a prominent somebody taking an interest in me for really no reason other than to learn more about me. I thank Elliot for his kindness and direction he shared toward me. I'll remember that forever with gratitude as I pay it forward”.

Russel also became an enthusiastic and passionate HiBEAM mentor.

HiBEAM brought a cohort of Hawaii tech entrepreneurs to Asia to meet potential investors, customers and research partners. Elliot advised and introduced us to meet leaders in the field of technology commercialization. Elliot had helped them with access to venture capital when they needed it. The goodwill and gratitude was palpable in their desire to meet and connect us with people of relevance and impact.

Our friendships continued. We still cannot believe that he is no longer with us. Piia Aarma expressed it well on our behalf:

“Losing Elliot leaves me with such a feeling of sadness for me and especially for Michele and his family”.

We offer our heartfelt condolences to Michele and the family at this difficult time. We hope that knowing how much Elliot has helped Hawaii in its pursuit of technology development and entrepreneurship, will comfort them. Elliot was instrumental in placing the island state of Hawaii on the world map with his dedication, work and vision.
