Welcome to Briefing #001 — one email a week on the science getting funded. This is the first issue, so the format will evolve, but the promise won't: no filler, just the biotech stories that actually moved.

### The big story: dengue's hard year

2026 has been the toughest year for dengue vaccinology since the field began. Brazil suspended the Butantan Institute's single-dose vaccine in June after two healthcare workers died following vaccination and 42 serious adverse events were reported — freezing the flagship of the world's most ambitious dengue immunization effort weeks into its national expansion. Then in Q3, Sanofi confirmed it is discontinuing Dengvaxia, the first dengue vaccine ever licensed, citing low demand. The US now has zero licensed dengue vaccines, exactly as dengue's mosquito range keeps widening.

But the headlines are thinner than the science. The Butantan suspension is pharmacovigilance working as designed, not a verdict; Dengvaxia's exit follows commercial reality, not efficacy reversal. What remains standing is Takeda's Qdenga — one licensed workhorse, one suspended hopeful, one discontinued pioneer.

### From the archive

Twenty years before this week's news, the previous tenant of this very domain was chasing dengue too: in 2006, Hawaii Biotech took funding from the Pediatric Dengue Vaccine Initiative to push its dengue vaccine toward the clinic. The archive has the receipts.
